The Growing Divide Between Politics and Business
In recent years, an increasing number of businesses and public figures have publicly taken sides on contentious political issues, leaving many customers and fans feeling alienated. Companies like Nike and Gillette have inserted themselves into political debates by airing ads that resonate more with Progressive ideals, while celebrities like Jimmy Kimmel, Pink, and Howard Stern have expressed open disdain for Conservative supporters. The rise of political polarization in business and entertainment has brought forth serious questions: Should companies and celebrities get involved in politics? Is there a way to express personal beliefs without alienating large swathes of the population?
At The Southern Elephant, we firmly believe in the First Amendment rights of businesses and individuals to express their opinions freely. However, when companies, corporations, and celebrities publicly take sides, particularly in a divisive political landscape, they run the risk of alienating a significant portion of their customer base. When they use their platforms to promote their political views rather than sticking to their products or craft, they unintentionally send a message to consumers who disagree politically: Your views don’t matter, and we don’t care if you take your business elsewhere.
We will examine the economic and reputational consequences of companies and celebrities getting involved in politics, focusing on specific examples of businesses and public figures who have alienated Conservative audiences. We will argue that while individuals have every right to their political beliefs, businesses and public figures must be prepared for the consequences when they choose to publicly promote those beliefs. Stick to your product, service, or art unless you’re ready to take the financial and reputational hit.
The Rise of Politically Active Companies and Celebrities
In the era of social media and 24/7 news cycles, it has become increasingly difficult for businesses and celebrities to remain apolitical. Companies like Nike, Coca-Cola, and Delta Airlines have taken public stances on issues ranging from racial justice to voting rights, often aligning themselves with Progressive causes. For instance, Nike’s 2018 campaign featuring former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who became famous for kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality, was a clear political statement. While the ad garnered praise from many Progressives, it also led to a wave of backlash, with some Conservatives burning their Nike shoes in protest. Despite the controversy, Nike’s stock rose, demonstrating that while alienating a portion of their customer base, they calculated that the gain in another demographic outweighed the loss.
Similarly, companies like Coca-Cola and Delta Airlines faced backlash from Conservatives for publicly opposing Georgia’s election reform laws in 2021. Georgia’s law was passed to ensure election integrity, but critics labeled it as voter suppression. Coca-Cola and Delta, major employers in the state, issued statements condemning the law, which led to Conservative calls for boycotts of both companies. Though these companies believed they were standing up for voting rights, they alienated millions of potential customers who viewed the issue differently.
Meanwhile, celebrities like Howard Stern, Jimmy Kimmel, and Pink have been vocal in their disdain for Donald Trump supporters. Howard Stern’s radio show has become a platform for frequent attacks on Trump and his supporters, calling them “stupid” and “unintelligent.” Jimmy Kimmel, who hosts a late-night talk show, has frequently mocked Conservatives, notably saying that he has “no respect” for Trump supporters. Pink, a pop icon, took a similar approach when she told fans who supported Trump that they were no longer welcome at her concerts.
As these examples illustrate, companies and celebrities often make calculated decisions to align themselves with particular political views. However, these decisions inevitably alienate large segments of their fan or customer base, leaving many Conservatives feeling unrepresented and unwelcome.
The Fallout: How Alienating Conservative Consumers Hurts the Bottom Line
When businesses and celebrities take divisive stances, the economic consequences can be significant. Boycotts, lost customers, and tarnished reputations are just some of the risks they face. For example, Gillette’s 2019 ad campaign, which addressed issues of masculinity, toxic behavior, and sexism, led to a heated backlash from Conservative viewers. The ad, which portrayed men in a negative light, was viewed by many as an attack on traditional gender roles and Conservative values. As a result, many men vowed to stop buying Gillette razors, and the company reported a $8 billion write-down that year. While it’s unclear if the ad was solely responsible for the financial loss, it demonstrated the real economic consequences of alienating a significant portion of a company’s customer base.
Similarly, Starbucks found itself at the center of controversy in 2015 when the company removed traditional Christmas imagery from its holiday cups in favor of a more generic design. Many Conservatives saw this as an attack on Christianity and Christmas itself, leading to boycotts and calls for customers to take their business elsewhere. Although Starbucks weathered the storm, the incident showcased how a seemingly minor decision could create a firestorm of negative attention and alienation.
Even the NFL faced substantial fallout after Colin Kaepernick began his protests during the national anthem. As more players joined the protests, many Conservative football fans expressed outrage, calling the protests disrespectful to the flag and military. President Donald Trump even weighed in, suggesting that team owners should fire players who “disrespected the flag.” The NFL saw a significant decline in TV ratings during this period, and the league faced boycotts from both sides of the political aisle. Eventually, the NFL issued statements supporting players’ rights to protest, but by that time, the damage had already been done to its Conservative fan base.
One of the most prominent examples of businesses alienating Conservative consumers came from Disney. In recent years, Disney has taken a more Progressive stance, particularly around issues of LGBTQ+ rights and social justice. Many Conservatives have accused Disney of “woke politics,” particularly in the case of their opposition to Florida’s Parental Rights in Education Bill (dubbed by critics as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill). This led to a public feud between Disney and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, culminating in efforts to strip Disney of its special self-governing status. Conservative parents, upset by Disney’s stance, have also called for boycotts of Disney’s parks and streaming services.
It’s clear that when companies and celebrities wade into the political fray, there’s often a hefty price to pay.
Celebrities Who Have Publicly Rejected Conservative Fans
Celebrities, like businesses, are often caught in the crossfire of politics and personal beliefs. For some, the political landscape has become a battleground where they feel compelled to speak out against the beliefs and values of their fans, particularly Conservatives. Four well-known celebrities—Howard Stern, Jimmy Kimmel, Hayley Williams, and Pink—have made headlines in recent years for their disdain toward Trump supporters and Conservatives in general.
Howard Stern, a shock jock and radio icon, has been particularly vocal about his disdain for Trump supporters. On multiple occasions, he’s labeled Trump supporters as “stupid,” “uninformed,” and “unintelligent.” Stern, who once considered Trump a personal friend, has since used his platform to bash both the former president and his supporters. Stern’s remarks alienated a large portion of his once-loyal fan base, many of whom align with Conservative values.
Similarly, Jimmy Kimmel has used his late-night platform to mock and belittle Trump supporters. Kimmel, who in the past was known for his comedic antics, has become increasingly political, taking jabs at Conservatives on everything from healthcare to climate change. Kimmel’s statements—like saying he has “no respect” for Trump supporters—have turned what was once light-hearted entertainment into a polarizing show. His shift in tone has alienated many viewers who used to enjoy his humor but now feel targeted for their political beliefs.
Hayley Williams, lead singer of Paramore, made waves when she told Conservative fans that they were not welcome at her concerts. Her statements, made on social media, shocked many fans who had been loyal to her band for years. While Williams may have felt she was standing up for her beliefs, her comments sent a clear message: Conservatives are not welcome. This has undoubtedly alienated a significant portion of her fan base, many of whom have likely walked away from supporting her music.
Then there’s Pink, a pop star who has never shied away from controversy. Like Williams, Pink has been open about her disdain for Trump supporters. She even suggested that those who support Trump are not welcome at her shows. Pink’s decision to openly reject a portion of her fan base, simply because of their political affiliation, is a bold move. However, it also alienates millions of potential listeners who no longer feel comfortable supporting her career.
These celebrities, by openly rejecting their Conservative fans, have chosen to divide rather than unite. Their public remarks send a message that their political beliefs outweigh their respect for their diverse fan bases, leaving many feeling unwelcome and disrespected.
The Conservative Response: Boycotts and Backlash
When businesses and celebrities alienate their Conservative customers or fan base through public political statements, the reaction is often swift and significant. Boycotts are one of the most common responses, as disillusioned customers or fans seek to withhold their financial support from companies or entertainers they believe have attacked their values.
In the case of Nike, after their controversial 2018 campaign featuring Colin Kaepernick, social media lit up with videos and photos of people burning their Nike products in protest. Kaepernick’s protests during the national anthem had already divided the nation, and by aligning with him, Nike further inflamed that division. Some Conservatives vowed never to buy Nike products again. Despite Nike’s gamble ultimately resulting in increased sales within a younger, more Progressive demographic, the company permanently lost the support of many Conservative customers.
Similarly, after Gillette released its 2019 ad focusing on toxic masculinity, Conservative men took to social media to express their outrage. The ad, which portrayed men in a critical light, was seen as an attack on traditional male values and Conservative ideals of masculinity. The backlash was so intense that many men vowed to stop purchasing Gillette products. While Gillette attempted to make amends in subsequent ad campaigns, many customers never returned, and the company experienced a significant financial loss.
Starbucks, known for being a more Progressive-leaning brand, also faced backlash when it removed traditional Christmas symbols from its holiday cups in 2015. This move led to accusations that the company was waging a “war on Christmas,” with many Christian Conservatives choosing to boycott the coffee giant. Though Starbucks weathered the storm, the company undoubtedly lost loyal customers who felt their values had been disrespected.
The backlash isn’t limited to companies. Celebrities like Howard Stern and Jimmy Kimmel have faced similar fallout from their political statements. Stern’s once-diverse listener base has dwindled as he continues to alienate Trump supporters, and Kimmel’s late-night show has lost viewership among Conservatives who no longer feel welcome. While both entertainers may have gained approval from their Liberal fans, they’ve undoubtedly sacrificed a significant portion of their audience in the process.
Boycotts and backlash from Conservatives demonstrate that businesses and celebrities can’t expect to alienate half of the political spectrum without repercussions. These boycotts and responses often lead to permanent damage, both financially and reputationally.
Big Earl’s Take: Keep Politics Out of My Shoes and Coffee!
Well, let me tell y’all somethin’. When I go to get a pair of sneakers, I ain’t expectin’ to hear a lecture about politics. I’m expectin’ a good pair of shoes that’ll get me through my day, plain and simple. And when I order a coffee, all I’m lookin’ for is that warm, caffeinated goodness to start my mornin’ right. Now, I ain’t sayin’ folks can’t have their opinions—we all got ‘em—but when you start tellin’ half your customers they don’t matter, don’t be surprised when they take their business elsewhere.
Nike and Starbucks can do whatever they want, but they’ve gotta remember they’re not the only game in town. Plenty of folks out here who’d rather spend their hard-earned dollars on businesses that respect ‘em, regardless of their politics. I’m not buyin’ shoes or coffee to get into a debate; I’m buyin’ ‘em ‘cause I like the product.
As for the celebs—Lord help ‘em! When Howard Stern and Jimmy Kimmel get up there actin’ like they’re better than the folks who made ‘em famous in the first place, well, that’s just plain foolish. They forget who’s tunin’ in, who’s buyin’ the tickets, and who’s keepin’ their pockets full. Now, I ain’t one to tell a man what to believe, but I’ll tell ya this: you don’t win fans by makin’ ‘em feel like they don’t belong.
So here’s Big Earl’s advice: stick to the music, stick to the shoes, and leave the politics at the door. If you’re runnin’ a business, remember that folks from all walks of life are keepin’ the lights on. And if you’re a celebrity, don’t go shovin’ your politics down people’s throats if you still want ‘em to show up at your concerts or watch your shows.
The Price of Alienation
The trend of businesses and celebrities alienating their Conservative base by delving into politics is a risky one. While the First Amendment guarantees freedom of speech, that doesn’t mean there aren’t consequences when public figures or companies use their platforms to push political ideologies. For companies, it can mean lost revenue, tarnished reputations, and diminished brand loyalty. For celebrities, it can mean losing a significant portion of their fan base and jeopardizing their careers.
At The Southern Elephant, we firmly believe that businesses and celebrities should feel free to express their political beliefs as individuals. However, when they step into the public arena and make divisive political statements, they need to understand that they risk alienating a large segment of their audience. In today’s polarized climate, it’s more important than ever to focus on the product, the service, or the craft—and leave the politics to the politicians.
For those who do choose to engage in political discourse, be prepared for the fallout. Conservatives, Republicans, and Trump supporters are not likely to forget when they’ve been told they’re not welcome. When businesses and celebrities alienate their audience, they may never win them back.
